Linux Tablet Complexities

I'm not an expert.

The experts live here:
The Linux wacom project
Gimp
Fedora

My wacom questions:

Does the pad setting in xorg.conf do anything useful?
Ditto the cursor setting.
I have never been able to get wacomcpl to work. Does it work for anybody?

My gimp questions:

Has anyone published a list of optimal tablet settings?

My Fedora 9 comments:

Fwiw, Fedora 9 seems pretty rough. I have Fedora 8 on another box and it was simple. I've done various other Red Hat and Fedora installs and various Suse and Ubuntu intalls and never had as much trouble.
If I disable the firewall why do I need to go back and disable iptables as well. What does an ip table do besides talk to a firewall?
If network manager is running, it sets firefox to "work offline". I go to services and turn it off and the next time I restart, it's running again.
I go to install additional software and with the default repositories it doesn't find anything. I go to software sources & turn everything on & now it works but I have no idea what most of these repositories are and why dont't the defaults work?
Just for the record, I have a 64 bit mb and I tried to install the 64 bit verision & had to give up. Maybe it's me but it was anything but smooth.
Does anaconda recognize wacom as non-HID by default?
I don't think so because if I look at /dev/input, it will say the tablet is event3 but if I use that in xorg.conf & restart, it will reset to evernt(someothernumber).
/dev/input/wacom is a link to whatever the event number happens to be & that works so maybe it doesn't matter.

If I get any answers to these questions or related useful information, I'll post it here.
If anyone has any answers they'd like to share, you can click one of the side gems and drop me a line.
